Diamonds
Bigger is Bigger and not necessarily better. The weight of a diamond is expressed in carats .1 carat equals .02 grams. A carat is further divided in to 100 points. The weight of all gem stones is described as ‘CARAT WEIGHT” The carat weight unit originates from the seed of a Carob or Locust tree that is common in the Middle East Its fruit is a seed pod containing a sweet syrup and small seeds which are extremely consistent in weight when dried The ancient pearl merchants of the Middle East adopted these seeds to weigh pearls.
In the U.K.in 1969 it became illegal to describe gemstone’s weights in anything but metric carats.

Diamond Gradings.
Diamonds come in all colours and clarities.

Diamond Colour
The colour of a diamond can be black or white and every shade in between as well as reds, blues, greens, yellow, browns etc.
The colour of a diamond is determined by comparing it to a set of internationally approved master stones with only about 10% of diamonds being colourless or white.
The white diamonds are called from “D” as exceptionally white plus. “E” as exceptionally white. “F” as rare white plus. “G” as rare white. “H” as white with “I” as slightly tinted white.

Diamond Clarity
The clarity or purity of a diamond is determined by the number, size and location of the internal and external impurities. These terms are internationally recognized and are expressed in the following symbols - I.F - internally flawless. VVS - very very slight inclusion. VS - very slight inclusion. SI - slight inclusion to P(Pique) meaning spotted and visible to the unaided eye. Terms such as Eye clean, loupe clean SI3 and I1, I2 are not generally used in Australia.

Diamond Cut
This is perhaps the most important of all the “C’s”. For if the cut or make is not at its optimum the fire or dispersion of light is lost. It is only if all the proportions are at an optimum angle that the full beauty of the diamond is obtained. There are a number of individual opinions as to which is best and a diamond regarded as an optimum make in one country may not be considered so in another country, the best is the one that sparkles the most.

Diamonds come in a variety of shapes with the most popular being the round brilliant cut or modern cut others such as oval, emerald, marquise, trilliant, princess, radiant, baguettes tapered baguettes heart and pear shape and a good selection of other styles as comprehensive as one can imagine. Have previously handled some interesting shapes such as a horse head, and a Star of David. Older stones are generally referred to as old mine cut, german cut or rose cut which is still very popular in India.
Diamonds were first sourced in India as early as 800 BC some early mines in the northern Pana district are still mined to this day. India is still a major manufacturer of diamonds. Diamonds are also mined in Brazil, Canada, Russia,Africa and Australia known for the Argyle diamonds that come in a very attractive range of colours such as champagnes and cognacs with perhaps the crowning glory, the famous pinks, which due to its rarity, attracts as much as $1 million plus per carat at auction.

Our range includes Natural Rubies, emeralds, Tanzanite, Amethyst, Aquamarine, Garnet both Pyrope and Rhodelite and Sapphires These are mined in many parts of the world such as Australia, Ceylon, Thailand, Burma, Sri Lanka, Cambodia’s Pailin district, Zambia, Brazil, Columbia and Madagascar.
